Engine

Problem Items to Check, Troubleshooting Steps, Remedies

Engine will not turn over

Possible causes:

  • E-stop pressed.

  • generator controller fault not cleared.

  • Discharged or failed battery.

  • Starter motor / solenoid failure.

  • Electrical / wiring issue.

Low voltage possible causes:

  • One or both batteries failed (cell condition).
  • Discharged batteries (drained, or not getting charged by the engine alternator).
  • Poor connections, due to loose or corroded terminals.
  • Intermittent or short circuit in the wiring

Check the starter signal fuse on the fuse panel and verify that the terminal and wiring conditions are intact at the rear of the fuse panel.

Unsuccessful start attempts / Engine cranks but fails to start

If the generator controller has performed all three consecutive start attempts and has detected that the engine has not started, the ‘Fail to Start’ shutdown alarm message will be displayed.

Possible causes:

  • Engine fuel system not primed
  • Air leak into the fuel system
  • Blocked intake air filter

  • Cold temperature / grid heater

Possible remedies:

  • Prime the fuel system according to the engine manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Check and ensure that all fuel line fittings are secured and that there are no fuel leaks near the fittings or the filters.
  • NOTE   Ensure that the gasket is installed on the fuel filters.

  • Check air intake filter dust restrictor indicator

  • Check air intake filter element

  • Check grid heater solenoid

  • Check grid heater fuse

Engine requires multiple cranking attempts before starting

Check that the fuel system is primed according to the engine manufacturer’s requirements.

Check that all fuel lines, fittings and fuel filters are secure and that they do not allow air to enter the fuel system.
